George II red and gilt Japanned coffer, with possibly original japanning in the manner of Giles Grendey. The quality of decoration, iconography and palette of the decoration all point to the workshop of London cabinet maker Giles Grendey (died 1780). Grendey is known to have completed a number of japanned pieces in a strikingly similar fashion, most notably the large suite of furniture created for Lazcano castle in Spain, the seat of the Dukes of Infantado.
