Attributable to Charles D'Agar (Paris 1669- London 1723)
Portrait of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744)
Born Sarah Jennings, she was a childhood friend of Queen Anne. She married John Churchill in 1677. He was later created Duke of Marlborough, partly the result of his success at the Battle of Blenheim, partly the result of his wife's intimacy with Queen Anne. These two factors also resulted in the nation building for the Duke and Duchess, Blenheim Palace, perhaps the finest Baroque building in England. Designed by John Vanbrugh, it was Sarah, the Duchess of Marlborough who supervised its completion. Please click to see detail image.
